About the Item

Sophus Vermehren was born as the son of the painter Frederik Vermehren and his wife Thomasine Ludvigne Grüner. He trained as a painter for three years and learned to draw from his father. He studied at Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademie in Copenhagen from 1883 to 1892 and made his debut at Charlottenborg in 1893 with a portrait of Professor Adolph Kittendorff. Vermehren participated regularly in Charlottenborg's spring exhibition between 1891 and 1915 and several times at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling. He is represented at, among others, the Statens Museum for Kunst. Vermehren worked as a drawing teacher at Københavns Tekniske Skole and, together with his brother Gustav Vermehren, ran a preparatory art school for students applying to the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1901 he married the artist Yelva Bock and the couple had three sons. Motive Visitors to the antique section of the Statens museum for Kunst. Vermehren had a varied output. He painted portraits, scenes from family life and landscapes. He also painted altarpieces for the churches in Herborg and Galten. His family pictures depict bourgeois life like in this painting, while his landscapes are idyllic and probably inspired by Julius Exner. Sophus Vermehren was less prolific than his brother but is generally considered more talented.
