Henri van Wijk
Set of Four Orientalist Landscape Paintings by van Wijk

1879

About the Item

Set of four Orientalist landscape paintings by van Wijk Dutch, 1879 Canvas: Height 35cm, width 65cm Largest frame: Height 41cm, width 71cm, depth 4cm Smallest frame: Height 39.5cm, width 69.5cm, depth 4cm This set of four Orientalist landscape scenes is by the Dutch artist Henri van Wijk (1833-c.1889). Van Wijk is known for his landscape paintings, and often worked in the Orientalist genre - these paintings in the Mayfair Gallery collection are a fine example of his work in this style. Each scene is filled with a small, naturalistic group of figures and animals. The figures, who either shepherd their flocks or ride on horses, are dressed in typical Orientalist fashions, with brightly coloured robes and turbans. Their sheep, goats, horses, and cattle are particularly finely depicted, with van Wijk expertly rendering their woollen coats and long tails. All of the vignettes are set on grassy plains surrounded by hills or mountains. In some, mosque spires can be seen in the background, reminding the viewer of the Orientalist setting. Of note are the expansive skies, which take up around half of the canvas in all four of the paintings. Three scenes are set against dazzling blue skies whilst the fourth is filled with bright white clouds, providing an interesting contrast. The artist’s decision to devote so much of the picture plane to these vivid skies effectively emphasises the natural landscape. Surrounded by wooden frames, each painting is signed ‘van Wyk’ in the lower left. One of the paintings is dated ‘1879’. With their evocative atmosphere and bright colours, this set of paintings exemplifies the superb Orientalist works emerging from Europe at the end of the 19th century.

  • Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by José Benito Ortega
    By José Benito Ortega

Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by Spanish Artist Ortega Spanish, early 20th Century Frame: Height 51cm, width 59cm, depth 2cm Board: Height 44cm, width 53cm, depth 0.5cm Fluidly painted, this vibrant oil on board depicts a dusty Orientalist scene. Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp. The cropped composition also gives a dynamic feel to the picture: a glance into early 20th Century desert life. The present painting was created by Spanish artist José Benito Ortega...

  • Woman, Dog & Spring Flowers, Large Scale Figurative Abstract with Petroglyphs
    By Cindy Kane
    Located in Soquel, CA
Woman, Dog & Spring Flowers, Large Scale Figurative Abstract with Petroglyphs by Cindy Kane Absolutely stunning large scale abstract expressionist painting titled "Bending Forward," by San Francisco and now Martha's Vineyard artist Cindy Kane (American, b. 1957). This unique monumental piece, created in 1987, has a netherworld primal quality depicting a petroglyph-like blonde woman and her animal spirit dog bending toward a flower-strewn earth. Additional petroglyph vignettes add mystery to narrative. Signed and dated "Kane '87" upper right. Unframed. Image size: 66.5"H x 84"W. Her early works were influenced by her memories of these hieroglyphs, and embellished with symbols from her dreams. “I hope [that viewers] get what I get from my work, which is enjoyment, visual satisfaction, and a story — whatever their own story is,” she said. “I can’t give them one, but I can tell my own, and the story they take with them is something personal.” Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come. While working in Grand Canyon National Park, she became familiar with the Anasazi Indian ruins...
