About the Item

A unique, humorous and colorful landscape painting by Harold Haydon depicting the artist painting alongside cows. The painting dates from 1941. Harold Emerson Haydon was born in Fort William, Ontario, Canada in 1909. Haydon came to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1941. He attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Haydon was a long-time Professor of Art at the University of Chicago, teaching from 1944-1975. He became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University from 1975-1982. In addition, Haydon served as the noted art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

    A Modernist landscape painting with figures by artist (William) Davenport Griffen. His paintings tend to be rare. (William) Davenport Griffen was born in 1894 in Millbrook, NY. He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, IA in 1918 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering; however, Griffen’s true love was painting. In 1919, he enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1923-1928. In 1926, he was awarded the American Travel Scholarship and began painting in Provincetown, MA. In 1928, he was awarded the John Quincy Adams Scholarship and spent six months painting in Paris, France. Griffen also painted in the U.S. Virgin Islands for 11 months between 1930-1931.     A large and wonderful Modernist still life of a cast iron pot, squash and ladle by artist Flora Schofield. Framed to 24" x 26". A painter, print maker and sculptor, Flora Schofield (Schoenfield), was born in Lanark, Illinois. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and taught Saturday classes there until 1904. Schoenfield also studied with Charles Hawthorne, B.J.O Nordfeldt and William Zorach in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She studied with Albert Gleizes, Fernand Leger and Natalia Goncharova in Paris, France. In 1923, Schofield’s abstractions caused a split at the venerable Chicago Society of Artists. When her artwork was was accepted by the jury, the notable Impressionist painter Pauline Palmer and the notable Modernist painter Carl Hoeckner got into a row that ended-up splitting the group. The Impressionists then broke away into their own organization called the ”Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors”.     "Parisian Model" is an oil on canvas painting by Max Weber painted in 1908. The work is signed and dated, lower right, "Max Weber Paris 1908". The painting size is 35 1/2 x 19 5/8 inches. The framed size is 43 x 27 x 2 1/4 inches. "Parisian Model" was painted in 1908, when Weber participated in a life class in Matisse's studio in Paris and painted several nudes. Weber was influenced toward a more Cubist styler after seeing Cezanne's work in the 1906-07 Salon in Paris, and he consorted within avant-garde circles in Paris as early as 1905. After returning to the US in 1909, Weber was credited with showing American audiences Cubism based on his firsthand knowledge of the key players and the style. Several drawings of Weber's from this time are in museum collections at The Met, the Smithsonian, and MoMA and show a similar style and stocatto gesture.
