Circa 1595

About the Item

A rare & important Italian Renaissance tempera on parchment painting, Giuseppe Cesari Il Cavalier d'Arpino (Giuseppe Cesari, 1568-1640), the painting circa 1595. Caesari was born in Rome in 1568 and his family came from Arpino in central Italy, he was apprenticed in Rome to Niccolò Pomarancio and adopted Pomaranancio's post Michelangelo Mannerist style. He received commissions in his early 20's for a number of chapels and choir vaults in both Rome and Naples and later completed murals for larger and more significant buildings. He was created "Cavaliere di Cristo" by his patron Pope Clement VIII by whom he was much patronized and also by Pope Sixtus V, he was also the chief of a studio in Rome where he led a number of students, briefly including Caravaggio in 1593-1594. This painting is very finely composed and depicts the Holy Family with John the Baptist and two attendant angels, in form this would have been described as a 'miniature' in the Renaissance period. The work is executed on vellum with egg tempera, the painting is housed in a gilded 18th century wood & gesso frame under glass, condition is very good indeed, no condition problems or restoration. A rare and important Italian Renaissance painting of the highest quality. Framed: 17" tall x 13.5" wide x 2" deep At Site: 13" tall x 9" wide

An eager participant in late 1950s happenings, in the 1960s he developed high-spirited, mixed-media environmental sculpture on an enormous scale. In these “sculpto-pictoramas,” as he has called them, multiple, life-size, cartoonish figures inhabit sharply observed localities, usually areas of New York. Related to pop art, his zany work often carries a sarcastic edge but not at the expense of good-natured hilarity. It also plays on nostalgia that stems from the artist's evident affection for his acutely rendered subjects, as befits an admirer of Edward Hopper's paintings. Charles Roger Grooms left Peabody College there to enroll in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a year. He then decamped for New York to continue his studies at the New School for Social Research (now New School). He also attended Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown. In the late 1950s, along with Allan Kaprow...
