Henry Bernard Chalon
'Prime Minister' with jockey John Shepherd up, and owner Sir Mark Sykes

About the Item

Henry Bernard Chalon (London 1770-1849) 'Prime Minister' with jockey John Shepherd up, and owner Sir Mark Sykes Signed and dated 'H.B. Chalon pinxit 1814' lower centre Oil on canvas Canvas size - 25 x 29 7/8 in Henry Bernard Chalon is amongst the most prolific animal painters of the late 18th/early 19th century. He was born the son Johannes Chalon (1749-1795), a Dutch musician and artist from Amsterdam and of the daughter of Sir John Barnard (1722-1761), sometime Lord Mayor of London. Chalon was a pupil at the RA Schools, and married a sister of James Ward RA, though his abandoning of his wife caused a long enmity between the two artists. There is some similarity in the free brushwork of the two artists, which derives from the style of George Morland, James Ward's other wayward brother-in-law. Chalon's success as an artist came early, and by 1795, aged 25, he was appointed as animal painter to the Duchess of York, and later to the Prince Regent and King William IV. Chalon enjoyed a very extensive patronage at the highest levels, and was a most prolific exhibitor at the Royal Academy, showing almost 200 paintings (including the present work) there during his career.
