Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822-1891)
A member of the renowned family of painters which included his father, the significant sporting artist John E Ferneley.
Born in Melton Mowbray, Claude remained there for his entire life and he was given his name in recognition of his godfather
Claude Loro who
was a patraine Smith to sporting artists and squire of Enderby.
Claude's father gave him instruction in painting and his influence is clearly discernible in his son’s work. Claude assisted his father
on some paintings occasionally, perhaps more than did his siblings, but this was mainly restricted to working up the backgrounds
and John Ferneley issued invoices commensurate with this practice, charging less for the work that his son had undertaken.
Because he was so adept at painting in his father’s style, at times he was commissioned to do copies of John’s works,
particularly following the latter’s death.
Claude was a most accomplished artist in his own right however and at his best was close to achieving the heights attained by his e
He only exhibited one painting, of horses, which was at the Royal Academy in 1868 but other examples of paintings by him can be seen at the
Leicester Museum and Art Gallery. The British Museum also various stately hoomes and museums

Claude-Lorraine Ferneley
Claude Lorraine Ferneley was the son of John E. Ferneley and was born in Melton Mowbray, where he lived all of his life. He was named after his godfather Charles Lorraine Smith, the famous squire of Enderby and patron of sporting painters. Ferneley was an immensely talented painter and also very musical. By the age of 10, when accompanying his father on work trips, he would play the piano for the assembled gentry. One of his most noted pictures was the Quorn at Kirby Gate. Ferneley painted several portraits of hunters and normally inscribed his pictures, Melton Mowbray. A Bachelor, Ferneley was said to have a most lovable character.
