Large Aboriginal-Inspired Abstract Oil on Board.

20th century

About the Item

Large Aboriginal-inspired abstract oil on board. We have shown the painting hanging in 'portrait' form but it could also be hung 'landscape'. This painting shares some of the qualities of Aboriginal art in the use of its earthy tones, two dimensional perspective ( flat as if looking down on a map or landscape from above) and also the use of white lines in place of the often used white dots in Aboriginal art. The image is very strong and vibrant and a good size and would sit very well on its own or amongst other tribal pieces. The Aborigines of Australia would create sacred art as a way of connecting with nature and the dreamtime spirit world beyond. Originally the art was ephemeral ( drawn in the earth or painted onto rocks to be worn away by time ) and was a spiritual occupation by men. Often the subject of the art was a map of a journey the artist had undertaken in the bush or during their dreamtime with the spirits, showing the direction the traveller had taken and some of the events that happened on the way. The white dots often used in later works for public consumption were there simply to cover up the spiritual essence of the painting which was sacred and not allowed to be viewed by Aboriginal women or those outside their ethnic group.

  • "Untitled Abstract" Oil on Board, Abstract Expressionist, Signed by the Artist
    Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY The energy and gusto of the applied paint in "Untitled Abstract" appears close to violent except for the calming influence of the circle in the middle. The red circle tempers the movement a little and brings all the strokes and wild directions into a harmony that is bursting with life. This is an extraordinarily expressive painting by Simpson. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy. Many well-known artists came to the frame shop and in time critiqued Simpson's work and developed a relationship with him. At NYU Simpson became acquainted with Hale Woodruff...
