About the Item
Like many of his compatriots of the time, Shulman transitioned from representation to abstraction in the post-WWII period as he studied with Hans Hoffman. Yet, his work, whether or abstraction or representation, was inspired by a keen sense of place--in this case, Monhegan Island, Maine, where he returned year-after-year to paint. Shulman was well-known in the day, but he died without children and his wife died shortly thereafter, so there was no one to insure his legacy. His work can be found in the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum, the Carnegie Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum, Bates College in Lewiston, Me, Vassar College, the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis College, among others.

- C17By Diana KurzLocated in Lawrence, NYThe story of the post-WWII New York School artists is still being written. The role of women in the art of the day still needs examination and study. Kurz is one such example. Diana Kurz (b. 1938) was born into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family whose business was Aryanized after the Anschluss forcing the family to flee, first to Spain, then across Europe, and finally to the United States. Brought up as a "normal" American girl, Kurz always wanted to be an artist. She studied at Brandeis, at Hunter with Robert Motherwell and received her MFA from Columbia. She received instruction from Hans Hoffmann, studied with Phillip Guston...Category
