About the Item
A wonderful late 19th century watercolour depicting a cottage scene with figures by the English artist Edward Angelo Goodall (1819-1908). This composition is reminiscent of Dutch interior scenes, with its use of light, shadow and depiction of everyday life. This humble interior is sparsely decorated indicating its inhabitants are poor, and looking closely the viewer can make out a figure in the bed, as a nun takes care of two small children. This intriguing scene has many unanswered questions. Well presented in a washline mount and lacquered wooden frame. Signed illegibly. On wove.
