Tina Ribarits
Snake VI - 21st Century Animal Drawings and Watercolors Blue Unique

2020

About the Item

Tina Ribarits Snake VI, 2020 Watercolor on paper, framed 75 x 116 cm Unique copy There is a ca. 5 cm long tear on the right side of the drawing. Tina Ribarits focuses on the forest as a theme and a surface for projecting the Other, permeated with images of the exotic, the mysterious and the wilderness. The artist is interested in a "virtual encounter" with nature where the natural world is at once both an idea shaped by culture and a reality that is not untouched or ahistorical, but instead marked by the colonial past and economic interests. Her large-format drawings show birds and snakes from the tropical forests of Latin America. The artist finds templates for them in various sources, such as the Internet, books or her own photographs. These are photographs that create images of a foreign habitat while also constituting a view that suggests physical proximity. Snakes and birds appear independent, untamable; decorative feathers and snakeskin are also trophies of civilization. At first glance, the drawings may resemble 19th-century scientific illustrations, but in the watercolor, which comes closer to painterly style, few of the details necessary for classification can be discerned. Instead, they point out how media communicate the strange, how they foster a way of looking at the other that can hardly be separated from the beauty and attractiveness of nature's splendid colors and finesse. In the role of an investigator, Tina Ribarits gives aesthetic space to the reflection of postcolonial relationships, while the images she creates tell of a friendly encounter with our non-human counterparts. Tina Ribarits (was born in 1981 in Vienna, she is based in Berlin and Vienna. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and received the Austrian State Scholarship for Photography in 2013. Furthermore she was selected as artist in residence for stays in London (2010), New York (2012) and Rome (2017). She exhibited in solo and group shows in amongst others, Austria, Germany and the UK.

  • Israeli Surrealist Painting Female Circus Performer Acrobat with Cat
    By Haya Graetz Ran
    Located in Surfside, FL
Voluptuous, ala Fernando Botero, female circus performer with spectators and cat. Haya Ran was born in Holon, Israel in 1948 on the same date as the State of Israel was founded. From 1968 to 1973 Ran lived on Kibbutz Sasa. After her stay on the Kibbutz, she took courses on Graphics at The Technion 1975-1978. Tel Hai Institute Ran paints with water colors, using a multilayer method, which creates an illusion of tempera. Ran came up with this technique herself, influenced medieval painters. Ran says that the reds, browns, and golds in most of her feminist works are inspired by the performing arts: the circus, clowns, acrobats, dancers, and the fantastic. Haya Ran doesn’t identify today with any particular artistic school. Her works are born out of personal experiences and feelings. They come from the remembrances of her past, of her life and her experiences as a child, and from the fantasies she entertains about them. Her subjects emanate from her private, inner world. Haya Ran focuses on the world of the female. Her women are a peculiar lot. Their dimensions are offer wide, distorted, and grotesque, yet their poses and settings are as enticing and charming as they are sexually arousing. Others of Haya Ran’s women remain attached to elements of a lost childish innocence; dolls, wooden horses, masks, and wooden birds. Her works are executed with watercolors on paper. Her technique resembles that of Renaissance tempera. She superimposes strata and blends them together to create the impression of a past era. She creates not by putting down on paper her sudden impulses, but by devoting painstaking attention to the smallest details over countless hours.
