Louis Rousselet ArtDeco Glass FloralLampwork Beaded Silver Toggle Necklace

About the Item

With a distinct silver twisted toggle clasp and multiple kinds of nubby rondelles dating to the late 1920s, Parisian parurier Louis Rousselet's workshop handcrafted this glass beaded necklace featuring cased floral lampwork capped by a mix of silver rondelles in stations with three types of reflective black faceted beads of various polished shapes and sizes. The eight lampwork beads each contain three stylized flowers in swirled pink, green and white glass. Although Rousselet (1892-1980) was creating custom-made costume jewelry for French couture houses since 1920, we date this necklace with its Art-Deco style geometric beads towards the end of that decade when he was selling ready-to-wear designs to French department stores. By these retailers, his jewelry was sold directly to consumers with a paper tag, instead of distinguished as couture with stamped text "depose" and/or "France/Made In France" for foreign clients. Notably, beginning in 1926 Rousselet was also providing made-to-order beads and metal findings for American entrepreneur Miriam Haskell whose first ready-to-wear costume-jewelry boutique, Le Bijou de L'Heure (Jewelry For Every Occasion), in a New York City hotel tapped the growing U.S. demand for Parisian couture by leading French fashion designers like Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli. To see similarly dated costume-jewelry findings by Rousselet, view our other listings for the Haskell peacock-colors beaded wire coil bracelet, which was assembled by her first designer Frank Hess, that includes the same style of nubby rondelles, but gilt ones. You can also see the twisted-metal toggle clasp on our earliest Haskell-Hess seashell-pendant white-glass sautoir, as well as on a couple of our couture Chanel necklaces. Given the in-demand distinct styles of those famous designers, we price this necklace for less as its finely hand-crafted components are the main attraction.

  • Antique HandPressedGlass European GoldFiligreeCapped Beaded Heavy Necklace
    Located in Chicago, IL
This antique rare hand-pressed-glass necklace features semi-translucent grape-green large beads that are capped with gilt-brass filigree. Based on the combination of bead seams, spring-ring clasp, and metal findings on the unmarked faux Chinese-jade necklace, it dates to the late Victorian period most likely from Western Europe. Around WWI, hand presses, which stamped molten glass into a mold to create a bead with a hole and a seam, were often used to produce costume jewelry as a cottage industry in Germany and the Czech region. This was while there was a lack of factory machine presses and finishing tumblers that used sand to polish out the seam lines. Another reason that the cloudy green beads can be identified as atypically hand-pressed is that they are more opaque and therefore harder and less prone to breaking during formation than fully-translucent glass, which was better suited for automated-machine pressing. Also the green beads are an unusual swirled color including white, which suggests that their production was more limited than machine-pressing would enable. Without the bead-seams, this necklace could be mistaken for one by Coco Chanel. Her 1920s couture...

  • Ethiopian Opal Bead Necklace, 680.00 Carats

Thirty-four solid opal beads totaling approximately 680.00 carats line the length of this eye-catching necklace. The graduated gems are an impressive size and perfectly matched, with each exhibiting a high level of translucence and a rainbow of colors. Opals are not cut into beads very often, as they are usually found in thin layers, and bigger deposits are exceptionally rare. Cutting the round structure also creates a great deal of excess– about 90% of the rough opal is cut away to create just one bead. To find 34 matching beads of this size and exceptional quality is extraordinary beyond compare. Opals are truly the stuff of legend. It was the Romans who first classified the black opal as a precious gemstone, believing that it was a source of good fortune. Since that time, the black opal has found its way into the crown jewels of many nations, including the Holy Roman Empire...
