A large gilt and crystal brooch, as a Maltese Cross, Joseff of Hollywood, 1940s

About the Item

A charming and stylish brooch from Joseff of Hollywood, in the shape of a Maltese Cross, made from Joseff's signature 'Russian' gilded metal and round and square cut pastes. With the metal formed in scrolls and the ribbed arms of the cross, four 'Fleur De Lys' motifs frame the central square cut stone. This brooch also had a ring attached to the back, enabling its owner to wear this either as a brooch or, by the addition of a suitable chain, a pendant. Another Joseff brooch, composed of the same elements, is also available here in this shop, pictured below with this cruxiform brooch. Eugene Joseff created ‘Joseff of Hollywood’ jewellery for the movies from 1935 until his death in 1948. His wife Joan Castle carried on his work thereafter. They had a huge collection of original pieces that they hired for films and also used as inspiration for their extremely popular retail line, which simplified the styles of the originals but retained the Russian gilding which Joseff developed (allowing cameras to film the jewels without glare), and allowing each wearer a very special piece of that Hollywood glamour and celebrity seen in the original films.

A charming and amusing clear paste and paste pearl brooch, in the form of a 'poodle. Beautifully modeled, with a small red nose as a highlight, and a single pearl atop its tail, a large clear stone as its body, the pearl and paste combination make a perfect combination in this depiction of a poodle. His daughter and son in law continued with the business until 1977. In the 1950s he made jewellery for Christian Dior.
