Tapestry Manufacture Brussels, Mid 17th - The Capture Of Rome 410 Ad - No. 1375

About the Item

The capture of Rome in 410 AD: The capture of Rome by the Visigoths in 410 AD marked the inexorable decline of the Western Roman Empire. If the year 476 is recognized as the official date of the fall of Rome with the deposition of its last emperor, the surrender of the city 66 years earlier had already on her knees. Led by Alaric, the Visigoths are not bloodthirsty barbarians. On the contrary, they are, for the most part, Romanized and Christianized. They are part of the federated peoples to whom Rome had granted territories in exchange for soldiers for his army. So, although they are not Roman citizens, they were integrated into the Empire and must comply with the same laws. However, Rome is not respecting its part of the agreement. Tough negotiations take place and conclude on a series of armed conflicts. Ultimately, Alaric decides to march on the city of Rome, while the emperor took refuge in Ravenna. The siege did not last because the population surrendered and opens the Porta Salaria for him. 40,000 men then returned to the city and pillaged it for three days. However, Rome was not set on fire, the churches and the people taking refuge there were spared out of respect for their common religion. Some high dignitaries are taken prisoner in order to obtain a ransom and the demands demanded from the start. In fact, in the foreground, the governor of Rome lays down his arms at the feet of Alaric as a sign of surrender. His sword with the imperial eagle pommel is now subject to barbarian power. The Visigoths, for their part, are also dressed in Roman armor since they were part of their army. Alaric sits in triumph, towering over the Roman soldier and placing his foot on his spear. The presence of lions on his armor testifies to his strength and courage. Likewise, he wears the laurel wreath to indicate his victory. In the background, a hostage is taken away fists linked by two Visigoth soldiers. Then, other men, coming from the city, are responsible for bag that they take back to their camp. Finally, in the background, armed troops enter Rome by the fortified walls of Porta Salaria. It is a defeat much more symbolic than material or economic, because it attests to the decadence of a political power which no longer manages to manage its own territory. Starting from bag, the fall of the Western Roman Empire is inevitable. This inevitability is reinforced by the admonitor behind Alaric, whose mischievous look establishes complicity with the spectator. All both know that the end of one of the greatest empires that has existed is near.
