About the Item
Antique Afghan Turkmen Torba Tent Bag
A wonderful, antique Afghan Turkmen Torba Tent Bag wall hanging or decorative wall covering, circa 1930s-1940s. This torba from Afghanistan Turkmenistan is in excellent original vintage condition. The original hanging cords are intact. The left-hand tassel is also intact, while the right-hand tassel is missing and has been replaced with a taupe tassel. This can easily be removed if desired.
Woven in woolen pile, the design consists of row upon row of tiny knots of
wool yarn tied to a swollen foundation. The dyes used to color the wool are all traditional. A variety of warm reds and reddish browns, usually obtained from madder root, dominate the color palette.
The combination of color, texture, design, and craftsmanship makes for an exquisite wall hanging, creating warmth and richness for the room of your choice. With a rod pocket for hanging, beautiful long fringe and striking colors, this would be a wonderful display piece.
The Turkmen were one of the divided peoples in Central Asia at the end
of the 19th century. The Turkmen tent bag is a very old piece, originating from the Jumod Turkmen in northern Afghanistan or Turkmenistan. The tent bag is known as a "Jallor," and would have hung inside a yurt to be used for the storage of small household items. These tent bags added to the comfort and beauty of the tents in which the Turkmen lived.
