Set of Four Pressed Botanical Specimens, circa 1900
About the Item
These four botanical specimens from the herbarium of A. Brun were hand-picked, pressed and preserved in the late-19th century. Each plant specimen is elegantly presented within a fine hardwood frame and includes a hand-written taxonomy card with the plant’s scientific name, family, habitat, and date collected. Originally used to document the plant diversity of a particular geographic area, herbariums wonderfully preserve the beauty of nature, making them quite a captivating and charming addition to any wall.

- Set of Three Provincial Chinese Wine Jugs, circa 1900Located in Chicago, ILThese early 20th century ceramic jars from China's Shandong province were formed with a bottle-neck shape meant for storing vinegar or rice wine. We suspect these jars were created to store wine for commercial sale, and were likely stoppered with a cork or wax seal. Left unglazed, the jugs are decorated only the irregular, organic smoke patterns created during the firing process. We love the neutral color story told by this set of vessels...Category

- Chinese Wooden Block Printing Set, circa 1900Located in Chicago, ILChinese innovations in ink, block printing, and movable type fueled global advancements in printing technology, expanding the range of influence of the written word. These printing innovations can be attributed to Chinese Buddhist devotees, who embraced woodblock printing as an important vehicle to spread sutras and good spirits. Though the printing press is said to have been invented in China, it never offered the same efficiencies to Chinese culture as it did in the West, due to the near endless numbers of Chinese characters and the labor involved in manipulating them. Enclosed in a contemporary wooden frame, each of the miniature wood blocks included in this early 20th-century type set was hand-carved with a Chinese character. Each is a unique and wonderful curiosity, providing an unusual look at a moment in time. Each set contains approximately 70 individual tiles.Category
