Original Antique Hand-colored Copperplate Engraving of a Crane, 1794
About the Item
"The Graceful Sentinel: The Crane"
Description: This beautifully hand-colored copperplate engraving from the closing years of the 18th century is a part of the celebrated series by William Hayes and Matilda Hayes.
It is sourced from "Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds" commissioned by the owners of Osterly Park and initially published in 1794 by Bulmer of London. The artwork was later included in the second edition in 1817, aimed at providing financial support to Hayes' family posthumously.
Depicted here is a crane, standing tall and vigilant, exuding an air of serene elegance. The bird's plumage is illustrated with a delicate precision, showcasing the subtle interplay of blue and grey feathers with highlights of black and the warmth of a red crown. Its poised stance on a gentle knoll, with minimalistic detail in the vegetation, draws full attention to the bird's sleek form and the distinctive "bustle" of feathers at its rear. The crane's elongated legs and neck speak to its noble stature and the grace with which it moves through its wetland habitats.
This engraving, steeped in the patina of age, provides more than just visual delight; it stands as a historical artifact, reflecting the interests and the dedication to natural history that characterized the Enlightenment era. The piece holds an enduring appeal, connecting the modern viewer to the past through the timeless beauty of the natural world.
