Large Antique Print of Waa-Pa-Shaw, a Sioux Chief, circa 1838

About the Item

Waa-Pa-Shaw: The Stately Sioux Chief This lithograph is titled "Waa-Pa-Shaw, a Sioux Chief," from the "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," with hand-colored portraits based on the works of Charles Bird King, circa 1838. The Sioux, known as Oceti Sakowin in their language, are groups of Native American tribes and First Nations peoples primarily from the Great Plains of North America. The Sioux were known for their powerful presence across the plains, their warrior culture, and their profound spiritual beliefs which were closely tied to the land. In this portrait, Waa-Pa-Shaw is dressed in a mixture of traditional and European-American clothing, which suggests a blending of cultures. He wears a blue coat with a golden vest underneath and a black cravat. The portrait reflects a common practice of the period for Native American leaders to wear European-style clothing, often given as diplomatic gifts, as they engaged in negotiations with the United States government. Waa-Pa-Shaw's expression is dignified and resolute, with his gaze directed away from the viewer, conveying a sense of contemplation and depth. Such portraits served as an important method of recording the likenesses of prominent Native American figures, many of whom played crucial roles in their people's history during a time of great upheaval and change.
