Japanese Traditional Woodblock Print Snow Flowers
About the Item
Original Japanese polychrome woodblock print "snowflowers" by Nishijima Katsuyuki. Signbed by the artist in pencil in the lower right corner. The subject in this artwork is the Honjin (Inn for Daimyô) in Kusatsu on a snowy day.
Honkin was the most prestigious accommodation in Shukuba (post town) in the Edo period. Kasatsu-juku Honjin was the landmark of Kusatsu-juku for about 240 years from the early Edo period to the early Meiji period. The books of guest records are written about many famous historical people who rested or stayed at the inn.
Nishijima Katsuyuki was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1945. From 1964 to 1968 he studied woodblock printing at the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto. Nishijima experimented with various forms of printing before focusing, from 1972, on woodblock printmaking in the Sosaku-hanga style. His prints are highly appreciated and portray a traditional and romantic vision of Japan, which the artist expresses with a truly unique style characterized by very deep colors.
