2001: a Space Odyssey

About the Item

2 Original double weight candid photographs for Stanley Kubrick's landmark science fiction film that is still considered one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time. (one oversized and one regular size ) The large oversized still is 14 1/4 x 11 1/4 in. (36.1 x 28.5 cm and the second one is 10 x 8 in. (25 x 20 cm) both these sizes given are before framing. These 2 pieces came from Mike Kaplan who was a publicity executive at MGM's home office in New York, and after meeting Kubrick at the film's New York premiere, where he proposed re-positioning the film, he became 2001's marketing strategist, culminating in its re-launching as 'The Ultimate Trip' in 1970. As part of his duties, he would select potential photographic images for publicity and media outlets from the contact sheets. For 2001, Kubrick had to approve what was chosen. Some appeared in various media; others were approved but never seen until now. These are exceptionally rare and no record of these photographs have surfaced before. These photographs are conservation framed with UV plexiglass in an Obeche wood frames with acid free card mounts and UV plexiglass. These pieces would be packed in strong box and shipped by Federal express.
