Two 19th Century Oil on Board Paintings After Pompeian Fresco
About the Item
These two paintings, considered tourist art produced in Naples Italy in the late 19th century, are reinterpretations of the frescos found in the excavations of Pompei. The painting is light and delicate, typical of Roman imperial works done as decorative background work for home interior schemes in ancient times. Both figures of females scantily robbed and displaying their charms are set onto dark void backgrounds. They could, in fact, be direct copies of works lifted from those found in the excavation sites in the area but could also just as easily be done with a nod to the ancient style but designed to appeal to tourists of the time. The two paintings are framed in period 1920s gilt wood and gesso frames and retain an old stamp on the back from the Hungarian National Gallery Export stamp indicating it was examined and allowed to be exported from the country.
