Spanish School Early 17th Century Oil Painting of Christ and the Virgin Mary

About the Item

An early 17th century painting in oil on canvas from the Spanish School depicting the Lamentation of Christ. In this moving depiction of the Lamentation Christ's body has been brought down from the cross. His head is cradled in the arms of his mother, the Virgin Mary who is the focus of the picture. The emotions of the Virgin Mary are beautifully expressed largely through her hands and face, especially her weeping downcast eyes. Her hunched body adds to the overall impression of agony and her gentle tender embrace is symbolic of a mothers loss. This was the conventional depiction of the Lamentation throughout the Renaissance and a similar pose of Mary and Christ can be seen in Giotto’s Lamentation from 1305. Picture presented in a frame of contemporary age to the painting.
