Modernist 1939 Oil Painting of Girl and her Dog by American Artist Nura Ulreich
About the Item
An incredibly sweet and whimsical painting by American artist Nura Woodson Ulreich. The sweet subject matter, the PAFA (Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts) provenance and the incredible Modernist frame were really all I needed to make up my mind. Oh who am I kidding? We both know that it was this incredible frame that drew me in. The stepped design, painted finish and joined corners (yeah, I always look at the back first) were really all I needed. Everything else was extra. And then I researched the artist - after I bought it of course. Nura Woodson Ulreich (1888 - 1950) is not your typical unknown artist. She is not your average Sunday painter either. Rather she experienced her fair share of acclaim. Her dreamy, whimsical works depicting children were well received in both the United States and in Europe during the 1920's and 1930's. She was most definitely on track for success. But then something stopped her. The world was in chaos. There was no safe eye of the storm to offer respite and a dreamy view of beautiful children. The world was at war and the art world responded. Abstract Expressionism was taking its turn as the vehicle for emoting. Artists turned to the chaos and spilled it out onto their canvases. Figurative painting took a back seat. Nura slowly faded into obscurity as the world pulled itself out of the pain and into a more comfortable place. But Nura died in 1950. Perhaps the art world's memory should delve a bit deeper and remember those who offered a bit of beauty during hard times. Dream, 1939 by Nura Woodson Ulreich is just that. Biography: "painter, printmaker, muralist, textile artist, ceramist, sculptor, teacher, author, and illustrator, was born Norah Woodson in Kansas City, Missouri 1899. She attended the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Students League in New York City, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. She also studied in Vienna and Paris. After the First World War, she married fellow artist Eduard Buk Ulreich and his nickname for her was Nura. Nura illustrated and wrote children books, including The Buttermilk Tree which was published by the author in 1934; Nura's Garden of Betty and Booth published by William Morrow in 1935; The Silver Bridge published by the author in 1937, Nura's Children Go Visiting published by The Studio publications, inc. in 1943, All Aboard, We Are Off published by The Studio publications, inc. in 1944, The Mitty Children Fix Things published by the Junior Literary Guild and American Studio Books in 1946, and The Kitten Who Listened published by Harper in 1950. Her books won awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Her work was included three times in the Corcoran Gallery International Biennials between 1928-1939. She was a member of and exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists in 1928 and 1941. In 1939, the exhibition Nura Ulreich: Paintings was mounted at the Dallas Museum of Art. Associated American Artists published four of her lithographs in the 1940s: Listen in 1946, Seraphine Sews in 1947, and The Vain One, and Young Spring in 1948. They also published two glazed stoneware pieces by Nura in 1949: a ceramic pitcher entitled Seven Seas and an ashtray entitled Contented Cow. Seven Seas was featured in the article "Useful Work of Artist" in the New York Times on September 16, 1950 (page 12). Other lithographs by Nura are Hay Foot, Straw Foot; An Interesting Story; Quiet Contemplation; and Darning Her Stockings. Nura's work is represented in the collections of the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, San Diego Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center."

Nura Ulreich
Nora Woodson Ulreich was born in 1899 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was known professionally as “Nura.” She was a painter, printmaker, author, and illustrator, particularly of children’s books. Ulreich studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Students League in New York. She also studied in Paris where she met her Hungarian-born husband, fellow artist Eduard Buk Ulreich, and first exhibited at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in 1926. Her style was a studied but naïve form of modernism and she often portrayed seemingly innocent views of children and their pets. Nura was a strong believer in Christian Science and sometimes included spiritual motifs in her whimsical pieces with an Art Deco-inspired palette. Nura frequently collaborated with Edward and their combined works often use the moniker “Bukannura.” In 1927, their work was exhibited at the Dudensing Gallery on 57th Street in New York. Eduard was also a muralist who completed commissions for the Treasury Department’s Section of Fine Arts between 1937 and 1940. Both Nura and Eduard are listed in Who Was Who in American Art and all other standard references.

- Alfano Dardari Midcentury Trompe L’oeil Still Life Oil Painting FramedLocated in Atlanta, GAA stunning trompe l'oeil (fool the eye) mid 20th century Italian oil painting by artist Alfano Dardari. This work depicts a beautiful flower in a vase with a perfect little droplet of water resting ever so gently on a petal. The flower in the vase sits atop a shelf upon which a gorgeous butterfly has alighted. Also on the shelf is a gold watch. And do you see a thread through all of this? I do. Mind you, it's my opinion but I'll happily share it with you. Memento Mori. Instead of defining it for you, I'll offer this description from the Tate in London: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers. Closely related to the memento mori picture is the vanitas still life. In addition to the symbols of mortality these may include other symbols such as musical instruments, wine and books to remind us explicitly of the vanity (in the sense of worthlessness) of worldly pleasures and goods. The term originally comes from the opening lines of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible: ‘Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity...Category
