About the Item
This piece by Jae Carmichael (1925-2005) features a patchwork gouache painting full of emotion and color, with broad strokes of yellow, red, green, and blue filling the artwork in horizontal and vertical directions. The overall impression of the painting is one of chaotic organization, with the colors and brushstrokes blending together in a dynamic and expressive manner.
Jae Carmichael, painter, sculptor, photographer, writer, and independent filmmaker. She was the founding director of Pasadena's Pacific Asia Museum. She staged more than 200 solo exhibitions in galleries in Los Angeles, Japan, and Europe and has works included in permanent collections of the Oakland Museum of California, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
In 1953, she became a member of the California Watercolor Society and has exhibited in the annual shows since that time.
In addition to painting and exhibiting her watercolors on a national level, Carmichael has produced sculptures, murals, oil paintings, and films.
She was also a director of the Pasadena Society of Artists.
