About the Item
Jules Salles-Wagner (French, 1814-1898) A Large and Impressive French, 19th century oil on canvas "The Water Carrier" depicting a standing and posing young peasant girl holding twin-copper water buckets. The young beauty with a flower on her hair, wearing a colorful shawl and a red dress, within an ornate giltwood and gesso frame. Signed: Jules Salles (lower left). circa 1880.
Jules Salles-Wagner was born in Nîmes, France on June 14, 1814 and died in Méme Ville in 1898. Throughout his carrer, he traveled through Italy, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Holland and Egypt. He enrolled in classes at the École de Dessin de Nîmes and won the prix de peinture in 1839. He studied under Paul Delaroche, and later met and married Adelheid Wagner, a successful artist. Salles-Wagner was represented by the influential art dealers Goupil et Cie. Jules Salles-Wagner exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1859 and in 1887.
