17th Century Dutch Old Master Painting Jan Josefsz van Goyen, Provenance For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of remarkable artistic output, a true Golden Age. One of the results of this period is this painting by Jan Josefsz van Goyen (1596-1656). It pictures a view of the White Cliffs of Dover. He uses his typical monochromatic color scheme with a golden haze. People and row boats in the foreground is a repeated theme that indicates van Goyen’s artistic creativity. This period painting in oil on canvas was wax relined at an earlier time. It is, like the majority of van Goyen’s paintings, unsigned. The stretchers on the reverse are signed and titled. Provenance and authentication from the Collection of Mr. Richard Ravenal, former owner of Asian Gallery in New York City, East 77th Street, Manhattan. Mr. Ravenal was a prominent Asian Art Dealer who sold items to major museums and important private collections. Condition is good considering wear, age and relining.
