Rare French Napoleon III Carom Billiard-Checkers-Draughts Card Game Table 'THIS'

About the Item

A Very Fine and Rare French Louis Philippe Carom Billiard - Draughts - Card - International Checkers Game Table by "THIS". The elegant rosewood table features a removable square top with a checkered inlaid design, suitable for playing international checkers. The top is adorned with a brass inlaid trim for added sophistication. Inside, the carom billiard compartment is lined with green felt and includes three balls, a red and two white, as well as two shooter-billiard poles with trigger. The table is supported by a circular tri-legged rosewood base on casters, adorned with amber molded glass knobs for adjusting the top's tilt. Inside, the interior trim proudly displays the cabinet maker's 'bubble level' plaque, which reads "'THIS' Jeux de Jardin - Jeux de Salon - Breveté S.G.D.G. - Fournisseur de S M L'imperatrice - BOUL_t Du Temple 43 Paris" showcasing its origin and craftsmanship. Circa: Paris, 1860. Carom billiard is a game played with three balls (two white and one red) on a table without pockets, in which the object is to drive one of the white balls (cue ball) into both of the other balls. Each carom thus completed counts one point. In a popular version of the game called three-cushion billiards, the cue ball is played so that it strikes an object ball and three or more cushions (not necessarily different cushions) in any order before striking the second object ball. The three balls are red, white, and white with a spot. The standard table in carom billiards is 5 by 10 feet (152 by 305 cm), although smaller tables of similar proportions are also used. The table is marked with three spots, one near its head, one at its center, and one near its foot. To begin play, the first player may select either white ball as cue ball. The red ball is spotted on the foot spot, a white ball on the head spot, and the cue ball within six inches directly to either side of the white object ball. The cue ball must contact the red ball first on the break (first) shot; on subsequent shots either red or white may be the first ball hit. If the first player scores on his opening shot, he may select either white ball as cue ball on his second shot. Subsequently, however, he must cue the white ball used on that second shot and his opponent must cue the other. When a player fails to score, he yields to his opponent, who plays the balls as they have been left. A game is usually continued until one player scores an agreed number of points, often 50. Shooting the wrong cue ball incurs a penalty of one point and loss of turn. International draughts (also called international checkers or Polish draughts). The Louis XIV style is a furnishing style covering more or less the period of the reign of Louis XIV (1661 to 1715). This style is characterized by the majesty and richness of its furnishings. The Louis XIV style follows the Louis XIII style. The furniture is increasingly luxurious, but unlike previous styles, it is almost no longer inspired by architecture. There are two kinds of furniture: ceremonial furniture richly decorated with veneers and inlays (especially with André-Charles Boulle), solid giltwood and bourgeois furniture in solid wood. The style is characterized above all by its absolute symmetry and an important and ostentatious Dimension. The Louis XIV style is of Italian and ancient inspiration. The style emerged with the advent of the reign of Louis XIV in 1661 and lasted until the end of the 17th century. In 1690, on the death of Lebrun, decorator to the King, the style declined and was gradually replaced by the Regency style. The Palace of Versailles is obviously extremely and lastingly marked by the Louis XIV style. His long reign made it possible to impose the unique style of the Grand...
