A Fine Paint Decorated Regency Mahogany Center Table

About the Item

This fine classical table decorated in paint with pelmets, greek key and anthenium relates to the work of Thomas Hope and his pattern books for the decoration of furniture. Done in highly figured wood and then decorated in the latest fashion of the time. This table is perfect to use as a center table in a room but is also small enough in scale to be used as a large end table or between a pair of chairs. The top finely veneered and book matched is centered on a wasting inverted triangular pedestal which is the set upon a trefoil base and with bun feet on raised casters

    Wear consistent with age and use. The table is in excellent conditon. There are a few shrinkage areas that have been addressed and some inpainting to rub thrus on the paint decoration but fully retored and having a new french polish and ready to use.

    This fine painted decorated planter in the manner of Angelica Kauffman was created in England circa 1890 to 1900. Hepplewhite in style the planter was made in England during the Edwardian era. This time saw a great rise in revival styles and culminated with the out break of the first world war. Hepplewhite design is most often associated with fine detail contrasting wood veneers and inlay , delicate painted details and a definite reference to historical precedents. Referencing Kauffman herself the piece is reminiscent of works in her historical painterly style. She i known to have painted a number of commissions on furniture while living in England as well a being one of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy. She classified herself as a painter of historical imagery but is also known for her many significant painting and portraits and scenes of late 18th century upper class life.
