English Antique Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard Circa 1780
About the Item
GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD OF GOOD DIMENSIONS
England, circa 1780
Item # 311IXP30A
An incredibly beautiful George III period sideboard circa 1780, it is particularly nice for the restrained size of the case, which measures only 59 1/2" in total width. It ends up being perfect for even smaller spaces where inches matter. The choice of timbers throughout was clearly done with a careful eye, particularly in the drawers where vibrant chaotic grains with golden rays flecking throughout the pattern make for a very pleasing display; these dense mahogany veneers have taken a polish very nicely over the centuries and the result is a positive glow through the old mellowed shellacs. While the finish has been refreshed somewhat over the years, which is why it presents so beautifully, remnants of the earliest finishes appear to remain in a lower traffic places like beneath the lip of the top, along the legs in a few areas and other recesses - this nearly black finish is a cherished contrast with the vibrant color of the mahogany. The sideboard features a single broad horizontal drawer in the middle fitted with baize lining and dividers for housing silverware. This is raised over an arched central superstructure flanked on the left by a full-height door (opening to reveal a large storage space) and on the right by a full-height drawer. The entire sideboard is raised over tapered legs terminating in cuffed ankles over simple toes. A fine sideboard, well-preserved, pure and untouched in structure, it is a piece that was made to last for generations and if it is well-cared for it will continue to serve for many generations to come.
Measurements: 36" H x 24 5/8" D x 59 1/2" W
Condition Report:
Old finish, not original but quite old and beautifully patinated; spots of veneer replaced around the edge of the top; a few horizontal shrinkage cracks to the sides of the case (some filled); drawers and door operate beautifully; scuffing and abrading to the surface with color variation throughout as expected; the front has a few small spots of veneer replacement; top with some discoloration including a few old cup rings; a very attractive presentation, well-preserved and well-built.
