About the Item
18th Century, French Louis XVI Wood sideboard by Conrad Mauter
Measurements: H cm 134 x W 90 x D 38; marble top cm W 94.5, x D 42 x thickness cm 2.5
This sideboard, which can also be used as a bookcase, was made in France in the eighteenth century.
Its structure is paved in precious bois de rose wood and rosewood and decorated with inlay fillet.
Above it is embellished with a marble top, coeval.
The band under the top has a drawer with lock and circular handles in chiseled bronze and gilded contemporary, as well as for the other bronzes present. The front corners are 45 degrees, enriched with gilded bronzes and chiseled with foliated motifs. At the front the cabinet has two doors closed by perforated mesh with circular bronze motifs. Inside there are several shelves for storing objects or books. The lower band, mixed, is decorated in the center by an application in gilded bronze with phytomorphic motifs and garlands. The four feet are quadrangular and molded. The skilful use of different woods in the color and the characteristic veining has allowed the cabinetmaker to create games and color contrasts very refined and decorative.
The stamping bears the name of Conrad Mauter (1742 - 1810) master cabinetmaker of the Count of Artois, future Charles X king of France.
This piece of furniture is small in size, suitable to be used as a sideboard or as a bookcase and easily inserted into any furnishing context. It can be placed in an entrance hall or in a study, in a room or in a bathroom, as well as in a bedroom, being particularly adaptable to any need.
Conrad Mauter was born in 1742 in Germany and emigrated to Paris around 1765, where he died on 14 May 1810. On 16 April 1787 he married Charlotte Félicité Foureau, daughter of Louis Foureau, master cabinetmaker who worked at the Faubourg Saint-Denis.
He began to work on his own in rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine from 1768 and obtained the title of master on 10 September 1777. His fame grew rapidly. In 1782 he became ordinary supplier to the Count of Artois, brother of the king and future Charles X. Thus, until the French Revolution, he delivered his furniture to the Temple Palace, to the castle of Bagatelle, to that of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the castle of Maisons and even the dressers at the castle of Saint-Cloud in 1791. He was one of the most prolific furniture manufacturers of this late century. Nevertheless, many of his works in these castles were destroyed or disappeared during the French Revolution. Under the Directory, Mauter continued its production and also made furniture in the Louis XVI style. At his death his business was still particularly prosperous: he had on his payroll eight cabinet-makers and his warehouse was very important (estimated at over 22,000 francs).
On his death, his company was bought by Nicolas-Louis Sandrin.
Mauter has left a large number of Louis XVI furniture almost all mahogany, characterized by classic lines. Its production is divided into two parts: very sober service furniture with a few bronzes, and more elaborate luxury furniture.
Specializing in salon tables, guéridons and gaming tables, he also left drawers, secretaries, desks, bonheurs-du-jour and bookshelves.
