Queen Anne Side Chair, New York State, circa 1750
About the Item
A boldly turned antique Queen Anne side chair in early paint, circa 1740. Chairs of this design are often called "fiddle-back" or "York chairs" and were made mainly in New York City, the Hudson Valley, Long Island and northern New Jersey. All these areas were settled by New World Dutch. This chair retains a very old (if not original) mahogany paint that later received some faded gold highlights including almost invisible lines suggesting toes or shells on the raised pad front feet. Chairs with the characteristics of this chair seem to suggest either Flushing, Oyster Bay, Huntington or Brookhaven as its origin. From the strong stile turnings, slender fiddle-shaped back splat, dipped crest-rail, hefty trumpet shaped front legs, elevated pad feet to the rare powerful front stretcher, this Queen Anne side chair is the best of its breed. The chair was made between 1740 and 1760.
