Sculptural Form Lounge Chairs, Mohair Fabric with Brass Legs, ISA, Italy, 1950

About the Item

Beautiful pair of restored sculptural form Italian lounge chairs in the style of Gio Ponti dating from the very early 1950s with beautifully hand crafted wood frames and sprung seats, the chairs are finished in mohair fabric with biomorphic form brass legs. The brass legs are stamped 'BREV' an Italian patent mark and are the same form legs that are found on several models of lounge chair that were fabricated by the Italian company ISA, Bergamo in 1950 including several models by Gio Ponti. The form of these chairs is also very reminiscent of the lounge chairs that Gio Ponti designed for the Hotel Bristol Merano, we feel that these chairs are even more beautiful that Ponti's design. We bought these wonderful chairs in Palermo, Sicily in rough condition, the chairs had been badly reupholstered in a brown leatherette where brass studding had been used instead of professionally stitched seams but the beauty of the form clearly still shone through so we could easily picture how beautiful they would be when fully restored. Upon stripping these chairs back to their bare wood frames for restoration of the upholstery we discovered that these chairs had been recovered several times since the 1950s. After stripping down 4 layers of upholstery we eventually got back to the original layer and made notes of the original materials used. These chairs have undergone four weeks of concentrated restoration work in our upholstery workshop, begining by stripping the chairs right back to their bare wood frames and then completely restoring the upholstery and seat frames from the ground up using the original classic materials including a new Latex foam finished back and cushion then upholstered with high quality 'Musco' Mohair fabric by the Dutch fabric manufacturer 'DE PLOEG' (color code 01/00). We have kept a full photographic record of the entire restoration process which we will make available to the buyer, please refer to the last few photos in the image section which document some of the restoration stages so you can get an idea of the amount of work involved.
