Restored Living Room Suite by Giuseppe Pagano for Bocconi University, c 1940s

About the Item

This rare five-piece (5) living room suite by Giuseppi Pagano, designed in 1939 for Bocconi University in Milan, is comprised of two oak bentwood upholstered open armchairs with ottomans and a settee. This set was recently restored, the oak bentwood frames still exhibit their 80 years of age in a beautiful fashion - just look at the old original screws - zoom in and see the gorgeous details that every year left on the frames - or ask us for high-definition photos so you can see just how much this set pleases the eye and mind. While the refinish made this set ready to be used in a high-end luxury designer application - collectors can appreciate the age retained in the subtle details under the refinish. Recently reupholstered, the nubby and thick pile silver-grey fabric has no noticeable wear or odors and has an incredible soft hand-feel. Ideal for interior designers as this set checks every box - also perfect for collectors and connoisseurs of architecture and design. The set of Giuseppi Pagano Pogatschnig lounge chairs and loveseat features an intriguing silhouette with its on-trend oak bentwood frames inspired from the Art Deco period as it was moving into Modern, making it more refined and sophisticated than typical Mid-Century Modern options and more on-trend with todays preferences of finish, texture and color. This living room set by Giuseppi Pagano Pogatschnig for Bocconi University of Milan would work great in an Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, Post-Modern or Mid-Century Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern, Danish Modern or Zen / Minimalist room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, or Classical room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. • Paul Frankl 'Speed' Art Deco Living Room Suite in Black Leather, circa 1930s
    By Paul Frankl
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This incredible Paul Frankl attributed 'Speed' full living room suite is comprised of a three-seat sofa, a 2-seat sofa, armchair and ottoman. The 3-seat sofa and armchair are original 1930s production based on the interior construction details and visible age. The 2-seat sofa and ottoman were created later in the 1980s to match the set and everything was then reupholstered to a thick quality black leather. I personally love this set - the wide arms are perfect for placing a glass of Scotch and an ashtray to enjoy a nice cigar. The deep black color and matching black block feet provide ample masculine style while the shape and silhouette provide a refined and classy vibe. The leather is thick and quality, also smooth and soft to the touch. The collector who acquired this sofa and armchair, purportedly in the 1980s, stated he found what he believed to be a Frankl Galleries (Paul Frankl's 1930s showroom) original example of the Speed sofa...

  • Pair of Club Chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, Signed
    By Sormani, Claudio Salocchi
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This newly reupholstered pair of club chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features graceful chrome frames with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery. *Note, we have the matching sofa available in another listing. The graceful frames share a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However these Sormani lounge chairs feature some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos). Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair of easy chairs are an amazing opportunity. These Cassina LC2 / LC3 style chairs...

  • 'Mah Jong' Living Room Set by Jean Paul Gaultier for Roche Bobois, Signed
By Hans Hopfer, Roche Bobois, Jean Paul Gaultier
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This large 22-piece living room set designed by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois, is called the "Mah Jong" sectional sofa with fabric and leather selections by Jean Paul Gaultier. Signed with Roche Bobois / Jean Paul Gaultier labels and repeat fabric. Included in this set are twenty two (22) pieces in total which include 12 square seat cushions (which also function as large ottomans and can be stacked), 4 straight backs, 2 corner backs, and 4 throw pillows. Unique to this set, which is quite rare, of the twenty two total pieces, two are light blue leather cushions with two light blue leather seat backs. The best part of this set is that you can mix and match the cushions and seat backs to make any style arrangement you wish, and create a customized room which you can change as frequently as your heart desires... you can create small and large sofas, loveseats, lounge chairs and ottomans using the cushions and seat backs. We also have other large Mah Jong sets available which can be combined with this set, if desired. Contact us for more details. Ideal for all kinds of uses... consider this set for a large screening room, den or living room, bedroom seating, entertainment room, commercial uses such as a hotel or boutique lounge, you can even spread the pieces around the house and put some in a large walk-in closet / dressing room, kids room, classroom or training room, and for those limited on space in an apartment - you can stack the cushions and then spread them out when you have company. A great way to make the most of space by keeping versatile with this Roche Bobois Mah Jong seating system. Originally designed in 1971 by Hans Hopfer the 'Mah Jong' seating system is as iconic today as it was then. Here is what Roche Bobois has to say about this design and the designer: Painter, sculptor, designer... Hans Hopfer designed sofas that are, for many, the indisputable “signature” of Roche Bobois’ collections. In the 1970s, Hopfer’s innovative and informal approach to comfort had a profound influence on the way people furnished and arranged their living space. In 1971, he created the Mah Jong, a sofa based on the total freedom of function and form. Starting with three basic elements that can be combined or stacked, the Mah Jong allows limitless options of composition. It can be an armchair, sofa, lounge chair or bed; a space in which to rest, to play or to lounge. It encourages experimentation and breaks the rules of formal living, reflecting the nonconformist era in which it was born. Avant-garde when first created, iconic today, and “dressed” by Missoni Home, Kenzo Takada and Jean Paul Gaultier, this “free form” modular seating is the reference point for fully modular and creative design. This large Mah Jong sectional sofa system by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois would work great in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Use this set to create sofa sections, settee sections, easy chair sections, ottomans and chaises, even a large daybed or room sized night-bed using...
