Bauhaus Rattan Garden Lounger Designed by Erich Dieckmann, 1930s
About the Item
Bauhaus rattan garden lounger designed by Erich Dieckmann, 1930s.
This particular piece of rattan furniture is a Bauhaus style armchair and was designed in the 1930s in Germany by Bauhaus designer Erich Dieckmann. The lounger is made of rattan, bamboo and metal. The high backrest, as well as the armrests and also the seat are made of a rattan weave, which is strictly geometric. The extendable footrest is also made of the wicker. The frame is made of bamboo cane as well as partly of metal.
The remarkable thing about the lounger is that despite the strict geometry of the design, it looks friendly and inviting. This is due to the designer's clever choice of materials. The rattan weave and the bamboo cane take away the austerity of the furniture.
Erich Dieckmann studied at the Bauhaus, where he later became deputy head of a furniture workshop. Dieckmann worked primarily on the development of seating furniture. Dieckmann experimented with steel tubes, just as Marcel Breuer had done. Dieckmann's most important works are standardized, simple wooden furniture with a strict geometric structure.
This piece is in original condition and in good condition. It has minor cracks and rust on the metal parts due to its age.
