Floris Chair by Gunter Beltzig
About the Item
The name Floris chair comes from the Latin meaning flower and bloom.
This chair was designed by German designer Beltzig günter to reflect the peaceful and prosperous society of the 1960s. After the war, he wanted to make a chair suitable for the era when the future of mankind seemed infinitely bright, such as sending astronauts into space through unprecedented technology development and Vietnam almost ending the war.
As a child, he had a learning disability that made it difficult for him to study, such as not being able to read numbers right away. Although he did not develop a spaceship, he developed this chair that looks like a space between a human and an astronaut, and designed playgrounds to escape from the world created by adults with a childlike heart.
It was designed in 1967 and presented at a furniture fair held in Cologne, Germany in 1968, drawing attention from American dealers, but due to production difficulties, only about 50 pieces were produced in the artist's studio until the 1970s. Although mass production was not realized, I think the Egonomics design, which closely resembles the neck, spine, and hip to support the body, and the design, which is lightweight and stackable, were quite valuable.
In addition, the attractive plasticity that resembles the human body and alien life forms is loved by collectors, and as a chair made of plastic, it is sold at auction at the highest price, and is exhibited in the world's leading museums.
Due to its popularity, a limited edition of 100 was reproduced in 1990 with Galerie Wolfgang F. Maure in Germany.
(However, it is still extremely rare, with only 150 units worldwide.)
The chair in the picture is a product with a sticker (a sticker in the shape of a spaceship flying object. I think it reflects the designer's childhood dream.) It is estimated to have been made in the designer's studio between the 1960s and 1970s.
