19th Century French Louis XVI Style Marquetry Bench, Banquette, Needlepoint

About the Item

This late nineteenth century French Louis XVI style marquetry bench features a frame of inset walnut panels inside borders of rosewood. The die joints are detailed with a diamond pattern. Upholstered with a needlepoint seat displaying a central basket flanked by flowers and finished with nail head trim, this seat rests on four tapered square legs. Ideal for use as a vanity bench or at the foot of a bed, c. 1890.

This antique chair-and-a-half from France, often referred to as a marquise (a wide fauteuils chair), showcases all the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary with tightly carved scrolled knuckles, beautiful accent trims, and acanthus leaf accents. Flower head medallions are carved at the knees, above the four round and fluted legs, each tapering gently towards their feet.
