Pair of French Late 18th Century Carved & Original Painted Directoire Armchairs

About the Item

A wonderful pair of French late eighteenth century with their original patina dating from Directoire period circa 1790. Recently reupholstered in a grey/beige linen fabric. The frame is carved with geometric patterns and acanthus leaf carvings where the seat and arm rests meet, and at the bottom of the legs. Painted in their original French grey and blue green colour. The Directoire style was popular in France during the late 18th century. It was a reaction to the ornate and extravagant Rococo style that had come before it.
