19th Century, Elongated Hexagonal Appliqué Penny Rug, Mounted for Hanging
About the Item
Vibrant 19th century appliqué "Penny Rug" featuring felted wool appliqué on ivory cotton field. Elongated hexagon shape, mounted on black linen stretcher with foam core base, and wired for either vertical or horizontal hanging. With alternating orange and black felt scalloped border with inset woven tape surrounding three layer "pennies" with blanket stitched edges. In a wide variety of appliquéd colors including black, green, orange, blue, white, pale pink, brown, maroon, charcoal, and grey. Slight loosening of stitching on a few of the medallions.
