About the Item

Early 20th Century Samarkand Dragon Carpet Size: 11'3" x 12'0" (342 x 365 cm) For ages Chinese rugs were made solely for the internal consumption and the access to those weaving wonders was largely limited for the western consumers. It all changed in the dawn of the 20th century when Far Asia opened its markets and started catering for the world's needs. It let to the creation of a truly remarkable design, a merger between eastern and western aesthetics. This outstanding vintage Chinese rug is a fruit of that indisputably successful marriage. On the royal crimson background we have an incredibly symbolic scene of two dragons floating in the clouds, they represent celestial guardians. A dragon is the most powerful motif in Chinese design being a Harbinger of good fortune and the protector of the pearls of wisdom. On the other hand, the borders bear more familiar motifs of flowers, frequently present on oriental carpets. The soft pile is masterfully hand-executed of the finest wool which ensures the ever-lasting quality. Despite being over 90 years old, the rug shows no signs of wear or blemish. This exotic composition will add an intriguing factor to any interior, it is a real treat for all rug connoisseurs.
