19th Century Antique Caucasian Verneh Rug

About the Item

Verneh – Karabagh, South Caucasus This high-quality Azerbaijani Verneh was woven using Soumak and brocade techniques on a dark-coloured base. With colourful geometric motifs, each of the 80 square compartments contains a large cruciform design with a hook at each end. The border consists of double hooks, like buckled belts. The carpet is clean and ready for use.

    Eagle Kazak – Karabagh, South Caucasus This masterful design is known as the “Eagle Kazak” and was produced in Chelaberd, Karabagh. Made in a larger format than usual, this Eagle Kazak has four medallions representing the sun in its radiant power. The sun’s rays are made with high precision. They are made up of twelve feathers and produce a captivating visual effect. A set of roses appears inside the medallions, and their surroundings are rich in geometric motifs and stylized animals. This piece has a rare detail in other Eagle Kazak rugs: the medallions are separated by intervals of coloured arrows. Even rarer is to find this rug with four medallions.
