About the Item
Two enamel on copper shallow trays by Edward Winter.
Abstract designs in blue.
One round with paler geometric pattern signed “Ed Winter.” 6" D.
One square with round center and abstract design signed “Winter.”
Measures: 5 5/8" x 5 5/8".
Condition for the round tray, excellent.
Condition of the square tray; well used with some chipping and
missing enamel on the edges.
Edward Winter (1908-1976), abstract designer, was a very important figure in the history and art of enameling in the United States. He studied at the Cleveland School of Art, graduating in 1931. Later he traveled to Vienna where he studied enameling and metalwork with Josef Hoffmann after which he became committed to enameling as his medium, executing designs in a modernist aesthetic. Winter won numerous prizes for his beautiful and well-respected enamels and wrote several books on the subject.

Edward Winter
Harold Edward Winter was an American artist who worked primarily in enamels. Winter was born in Pasadena, California, to John Edward Winter and Lila Winter. He studied art in Vienna, Austria, and went on to teach at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Old White Art Colony in West Virginia. In December 1939, he married the ceramist Thelma Frazier. Winter died in 1976, and Thelma died the following year.
