Vintage "Masuyama" Lehman Wind-Up Toy. German, Circa 1913 Rare
About the Item
Early 1900's German hand painted and lithographed tin wind-up toy, by premier tin and whimsical toy maker, Ernest Paul Lehman, circa 1913. This charming and unique toy portrays a Japanese man pulling a seated geisha woman in the back of a rickshaw. This toy is an exceptional example, in the upper echelon of extant "Masuyama" Lehmans. It is completely original in every aspect, which is quite unusual, considering they were prone to breakage and replacements through playing with and handling. The man is dressed in a green checkered coat with rose colored pants and a yellow hat. The lady is adorned in a blue and white floral kimono; she is holding a green petal and red floral decorated fan. The wheels are painted yellow and the carriage is black with white writing. The figures are both authentic, as is the fan the lady is holding, and, most importantly, the parasol is the original example. The green floral umbrella is affixed simply by inserting it in the hole provided, so that when the toy is turned upside down, the umbrella falls out. So, as you can well imagine, to find an original parasol is very special; the toy probably had very little "playtime", if any at all. No restoration or touch-up paint anywhere, original legs, shoes and rails. Markings on the back (see images) indicate patent information and "Made in Germany" genesis, and "Lehman" manufacture. This is the earlier version, as indicated by the broad brim hat on the man versus the later pointed hat.
The toy operates just fine (see operating video accompanying the listing); as the wheels turn smoothly and the lady fans herself by moving the hand held fan back and forth vociferously. When placed on the ground it does not have the energy to drive it across the floor (no examples do); but, considering the high value, fragility, outstanding condition, and rarity of this museum quality toy, one should not really operate it, except as shown in the video. Enjoy the acquisition and pride of ownership on your shelf. This is considered one of the more iconic pre-war tin wind-up toys, and a staple in high quality vintage toy collections----it is one of the Lehman toy company's most sought after and best toys.
The "Masuyama" Lehman Toy is memorialized by foremost Lehman toy authorities, Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik in their book "Lehman Toys" on pages 64 and 65 where it is identified as "EPL. No. 775". The example I am offering is of the same quality as the full page one shown on page 65.
Although founded earlier in Brandenburg, Germany, Ernest Paul Lehman's best toys were produced after 1887 up until the depression.
Dimensions: 8" long x 3" wide x 5 1/2" high
Provenance: From my personal collection of fine antique toys. Acquired in 1995 from a prominent toy collection.
Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage toys and children's playthings; important considering the fakes and reproductions in the marketplace
it would behoove an enterprising collector, dealer, or decorator to take advantage of the opportunity to buy as many of the vintage tin toys that I have listed for sale; it would create an immediate quality collection, as most of these toys came, either from a long time premium California collection or from my own shelves. It would take quite some time and effort to accumulate toys this clean, authentic, original, operable and in excellent condition.

- German Tinplate Clockwork Wind Up Toy by the Lehman Co. "Balky Mule" Circa 1909By E.P. Lehman Co.Located in Incline Village, NVPerhaps the wildest action of all the Lehman toys, said to resemble Ernest Paul Lehman's temperament (founder of the company), "Balky Mule" was first manufactured in 1897 in Berlin (Brandenburg), and had a multi decade run; this example is from around 1909 (see image with markings to the rear of the carriage). The toy is catalogued as "EPL #425" and documented on page 59 and 60 of the book "Lehman Toys" by Jurgen & Marianne Cieslik, published in 1982. To operate the toy; wind up the attached clockwork key on the underneath of the carriage and place the toy on the floor. Do not over-wind and be gentle, as the toy is aggressive and over 100 years old. The toy will go backwards and forward, and the clown will pop up and down as the cart goes in several different directions across the floor until it winds down (see video accompanying the listing for guidance). The toy is found broken and/or inoperable, more often than not, because of the rough action, and typical abuse by children (after all, it was a toy). This example is in very nice original condition and works well. The lithography and hand paint is bright and original with no touch up or repaint. The hand paint is; flesh tones to the face of the clown, red trousers, orange hair, and grey paint to the seat of the carriage. The clothing to the clown figure is still intact and all original. The lithography to the wheels features brightly colored clowns and a German marking logo. What is really unusual is the fact that the donkey still has all four of its loosely attached original legs, considering the aggressive action of the toy. The metal on the donkey is actually treated with "fabric like" paint, to simulate fur. All in all this is a really cool toy and a "must have" for the collector of tin toys, or someone who simply wants a wonderful example of an early, "turn of the century" iconic wind up toy. - Vintage Wind-Up Toy, Circa 1950 "Smiling Boy Polishing Boots" RareLocated in Incline Village, NVThis is a very rare toy that I have not seen an example of before, and judging by it's action and appearance, I would venture to say it is post war, probably made in Japan for the American market (boy looks very American). I have called it "Smiling Boy Polishing Boots" which resembles the clockwork movement. To operate: hold the toy in the left hand with thumb on chest and then; wind up attached original key with the right hand several times; and release. With a smiling face, the boy will roll his head back and forth, while diligently shining his black boots, using an up and down motion with his right hand. The toy works quite well and will go on for some time. It is made up of several materials. The head, hands, and shoes are made of composition; it has a tin body; the clothes jersey, hat, and "falling" trousers" are made of fabric. The toy is in good original condition; some wear to boy's hat and jersey in back (see images), a slight "bend" to tinplate in the rear; but for the most part, the toy is very sturdy, works well, has a nice appearance, and wonderful charisma. This is a charming rare toy that operates as it should, and is a "must have" for collectors of post-war vintage wind up toys...Category
