About the Item
Unique hand carved church or monastery statue of Saint and former lay brother Gerard Majella.
Gerardo Maiella (6 April 1726 – 16 October 1755) was an Italian lay brother of the Congregation of the Redeemer, better known as the Redemptorists, who is honored as a saint by the Catholic Church. In 1893 this former lay brother was beatified and he was canonized in 1904. If you want to know more about this extraordinary lay brother and Saint then you can read about his life and qualities via the worldwide web. He is often depicted holding a crucifix, but you will never find an antique wooden sculpture of this holy man of this incredible quality workmanship, let alone one of this size. This is one of the largest wooden Saint sculptures that we ever had the pleasure of offering and the quality and condition is right up there with the best as well. We learned early on that you can very often recognize a very good sculpture/carving by the quality of the hands and when we first saw these hands, we were immediately sold. However, you too will find many more details that will make you realize that this is one very special antique statue. In the more close-up photos you can also see that this large wooden sculpture was built-up out of several large layers of wood and they were skillfully jointed with antique tenon hole connections. It takes a highly skilled artisan to carve a wooden sculpture in this manner and a sculpture of this size and details would have taken at least a month to create. To us, this striking sculpture represents more than 'just' the image of one particular Saint or monk. To us, this remarkable antique stands for all those who have dedicated their lives to Jesus and what He stood for. It respresents goodness, grace, faith, dedication, respect, patience and all other qualities that together represent love and all the good that comes from that. We would like this large antique statue to go to a church or monastery, but when loved by a private collector and taken good care off, we would ofcourse be appreciative of that as well.
