Combination Board Game of Marble Solitaire and Tiddlywinks, circa 1925
About the Item
This is a complete combination board game of marble solitaire and tiddlywinks, dating to the early 20th century.
This is a most unusual and very decorative game set with a beautiful board.
The circular turned board is very attractive being made of a hardwood, with a central marble solitaire section having an outer gallery, surrounded by twelve dished bowls cut into the wood on the outer perimeter.
It comes complete with a full set of 33 (32 plus one spare) old glass playing marbles and 25 tiddlywinks.
Popular in the court of Louis the XIV, the game of solitaire was supposedly invented by a nobleman incarcerated in the Bastille in France during the 17th century and was popular in the court of Louis XIV. It is a challenging game for the fan of strategy and skill and became one of the more popular games of the last few hundred years. To play, place all 32 marbles with one hole left unoccupied in the middle of the board. The objective is simply to remove all but one of the marbles by jumping one marble over another, similar to the game of draughts. The marble jumped is removed to the gallery around the side of the board.
The aim of the game of Tiddlywinks is to shoot a wink into flight by flicking the wink (disc) with another disk across the top of a wink and then over its edge, thereby propelling it into the air. The offensive objective of the game is to score points by sending your own winks into a pot or bowl on the board. Tiddlywinks was first patented in England by Joseph Assheton Fincher of London as a new and improved game
This game can be played and enjoyed by young and old alike.
