This antique first edition book titled "The Compleat Herbal" or 'The botanical institutions of Mr. Tournefort' was published in 1719 in England on paper and bound in leather in the period George 1 style. The book is comprised of six hundred and twenty five pages, translated from the original latin with additions from formidable contemporaries including an index which outlines the names and medicinal virtues of various plants, and illustrated with over five hundred copper engravings. This book is intended to be instructive and for general use based on the work of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, the chief botanist to the French King who is credited for developing the first clear definition of the genus of plants. The book is in good period condition as presented.
