A beautifully bound first edition set of this important authorativie reference work on the peerage of Britain, by George Edward Cokayne.
The first edition of this work.
Complete in eight volumes.
In a fine half morocco binding by Morrell.
'The Complete Peerage' is an important and fundamental magisterial work on the titled aristocracy of Britain, an immense reference to the peers of the country.
Since its first publication, 'The Complete Peerage' has become the standard and authoritative reference work on the subject.
The work contains brief biographies and details of estates and genealogy of the whole of Great Britain and the British Isles.
Volume I contains A-Bo, Volume II contains Bra-C, Volume III contains D-F, Volume IV contains G-K, Volume V contains L-M, Volume VI contains N-R, Volume VII contains S-T, and Volume VIII contains U-Z.
Compiled and edited by George Edward Cokayne, a genealogist who rose to the rank of Clarenceux King of Arms.
Two leaves of a list of subscribes to the rear of Volumes III, V, and VII, to the front of Volumes IV and VI.
One page of adverts to the rear of Volume VI.
Bookplate of Henry Lloyd Gibbs to the front paste downs.
In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards, a signed binding by Morrell. Externally, smart. A little rubbing to the spines and extremities Spines are a little faded. A few light marks to the boards and spines. Odd spots to the fore edges. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just a few odd spots.
