100 Twentieth Century Houses
About the Item
Author Twentieth Century Society
A celebration of Britain’s diverse housing styles throughout the twentieth century and beyond.
Showcasing 100 houses from the twentieth century, this book provides a fascinating insight into Britain’s built heritage and how the architectural styles of the time adapted dramatically to urban life. From specially commissioned architect-design houses to housing built for increased workforces, each of the 100 houses brings a different design style or historical story. Architectural styles featured range from mock Tudor and Arts and Crafts to modernism and brutalism. Accompanying each entry are texts written by leading architectural critics and historians, including Gavin Stamp, Elain Harwood, Barnabas Calder, Ellis Woodman, and Gillian Darley.
About The Author
The Twentieth Century Society is a British charity that campaigns for the preservation of architectural heritage from 1914 onward. They provide support and advice to architects and planning authorities to protect the best twentieth-century architecture and design, whether through listing or sympathetic development and management.

- Scott Mitchell HousesBy Calvin Klein, Rizzoli International PublicationsLocated in New York, NYA stunning volume that gathers the California designer's most impressive works to date, from coastal sanctuaries to modern country farms. A master of his genre, Scott Mitchell is celebrated for his warm approach to connecting the built and natural environment. Sought after for their minimalist, material-driven aesthetic, Mitchell's houses are studies in space, materiality, and light. Emphasizing an elegant spatial order, his projects respond to the natural appeal of their locations, be they bucolic retreats on Long Island or resplendent beach houses overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The first volume on his work, Scott Mitchell Houses is a sublime exploration of the architectural designer's impressive portfolio of projects. Dynamic compositions of light and shadow with a masterful use of concrete, Mitchell's monolithic forms draw on the surrounding environment via floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto vistas so cinematic that Tom Ford utilized one of Mitchell's homes in his neo-noir film Nocturnal Animals. Through previously unpublished photographs, readers are given an exclusive view into eight pivotal projects that span the globe from the Hamptons to Melbourne, featuring images by Ross Bleckner, Scott Frances, Trevor Mein, and Steve Shaw...Category

- Finding Home The Houses of Pursley DixonBy Rizzoli International PublicationsLocated in New York, NYAuthor Ken Pursley and Jacqueline Terrebonne, Foreword by Suzanne Kasler In their first book, acclaimed architects Ken Pursley and Craig Dixon explore how to create gracious homes with welcoming entryways, soulful interiors, inviting porches, and ebullient gardens. Founded on the simple principle “Build beautiful things,” the architectural team of Pursley Dixon, like populist architects Bobby McAlpine and Jeff Dungan, is known for blending elements of tradition with a modern lifestyle. In Finding Home, they share 15 stunning houses in three distinct styles: rustic mountain escapes, dreamy retreats by the water, and elegant houses in town. Each house has its own thoughtful visual narrative, but all are connected on an innate and authentic level by their sense of proportion, attention to detail, and a marvelous affinity with nature, displayed in their soothing neutral palettes, oversize windows that bring the outdoors in, and natural materials such as rough-hewn stone and unfinished wood. Little touches of humanity await discovery, such as a sleeping nook perched right out into the highest branches of a tree. These eccentricities and secrets add to the distinctly Southern sense of warmth and refuge these homes provide, homes whose open interiors and majestic porches easily accommodate family and gatherings. Featuring their own interior design work as well as that of acclaimed decorators such as Suzanne Kasler, Phoebe Howard, and Circa Interiors...Category

- Scandinavian Ceramics & Glass in the Twentieth Century (Book)Located in North Yorkshire, GBby Jennifer Hawkins Opis This is a comprehensive catalogue of the Scandinavian Ceramics and Glass collection at the V&A, showing comparative material from all four Scandinavian countries. The history of the many ceramics and glass factories, their artists and designers is outlined against a changing social and political background. Scandinavian design, from the 1950s to the 1970s, was a by-word for modernism. Scandinavian style was the style to which all other designers aspired during that time and the Nordic designers were awarded all the major prizes. Earlier, during the 1920s and 1930s Scandinavian designers were establishing influential design concepts, and ceramics and glass production attracted many of the key artists. Masterworks are included: from Alvar Aalto's "Savoy" vase to Tapio Wirkkala...Category
