Ulla Winblad for Alingsås Ceramics Scandinavian Midcentury Handmade Lamp, 1960s
About the Item
Handmade and hand decorated Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern ceramic table lamp by Swedish designer Ulla Winblad for Alingsås Keramik. Manufactured in the small, Swedish town of Alingsås in the early 1960s. Handpainted and hand etched graphic decorations in chalk white glaze around the belly of the lamp. Very unusual handmade decorations reminiscent of lace or a crowd of small faces with an astonished look. Raw ceramics neck and base. Model 62 AK. E27 bulb. Signed, stamped and labelled on base.
About the designer:
Ulla Winblad-Hjelmqvist (1933-1992) was born in Helsingborg, Sweden and was trained at Jie Johnson Ceramics in the small town of Gantofta not far from home, before she started her education as a ceramic artist at Slöjdföreningens Skola in Gothenburg. In 1958, Winblad-Hjelmqvist was hired as the artistic leader at Alingsås Ceramics, which had 50 employees at the time and a large artistic ceramic production. Winblad-Hjelmqvist mainly produced decorative vases and bowls often with geometric and graphic patterns. In 1967, she moved to Seattle, WA to open her own ceramic studio and expanded her production to include figurines, jewelry and raku pieces. In 1982, Swedish King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited her studio and bought some of her work, and Winblad-Hjelmqvist generally got even more appreciation in USA than in her homeland Sweden. The Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle bought a large collection of her work for their permanent show, and her work has been exhibited at the International Academy of Ceramics, the North West Craft Center and as well as local galleries. She was a member of Washington Potters Association and Northwest Designer Craftsmen until she tragically died from breast cancer in 1992 at the early age of 58. Items made in Sweden she signed “U Winblad” along with the studio name “Alingsås”, while items produced in the US, she signed “Winblad-Hjelmqvist”.
