Scandinavian Tin and Glass Accent Ceiling Lamp, Scandinavia, 1920s
About the Item
Lighting is a huge part of Scandinavian design, ranging from the warm, low light of a candle to the bright overhead glow of a ceiling light. This early 20th century ceiling lamp is a unique piece of functionalist design with the unmistakeable touches of Modernism.
Modernism, a cultural movement that started at the end of the 19th century, was a break from the Realism that dominated the art world before. Modernism was an escape from this rigidity, and in combination with the minimalist approach of Scandinavian design, a distinctive style was born, with clean simple lines and inherent elegance. Highly functional, this ceiling lamp, like the style itself, is effective without needing heavy elements. While this shape used to be quite common, this lamp offers plenty that distinguishes it aesthetically. First and foremost, the glass shade has a unique surface with indentations on its inner layer resulting in an interesting look that is only enhanced when the light is turned on. The black lacquered tin frame “cages” the glass shade with a swirling line that connects the lower ring plate and the top. The rod and canopy have an understated look and direct the eye to the body.
The patterned glass shade and tin body are used creatively to set this ceiling lamp apart. Its streamlined modernism makes it an ideal addition to any interior style and space, while the unique materials make it a beautiful accent piece.

- Scandinavian Cylindrical Tripod Floor Lamp, Scandinavia 1950sLocated in Utrecht, NLThis one-of-a-kind floor lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details. Design in the mid-century years was fuelled by the development of materials and technology with stunning results as seen in this floor lamp design. Scandinavian furniture was made with mostly light-coloured materials and some furniture shapes included elements of asymmetry, or having two sides that were not completely even and balanced. This can be seen here as well, as the lamp’s black lacquered metal structure isn’t perfectly symmetrical, instead, the “cage” surrounding the lampshade spirals downwards. The fluted lampshade has a cylindrical shape and is made of a light coloured fabric. It is stretched over metal wires that create the lines. Thanks to its large, almost see-through quality, the warm light is diffused evenly when the lamp is switched on. Furthermore, the fabric shade pairs well with the colder metal structure. The tripod legs stem out from a ball-shaped joint, and also end in small, brass sphere feet. While the design dates to the 1950s, it has an interesting, almost futuristic modern...Category

- Six-Arm Brass and Metal Chandelier, Scandinavia, 1960sLocated in Utrecht, NLChandeliers have often been used as decorative focal points for rooms since the 20th century. In Scandinavian mid-century design, where interior lighting is of particular importance, designers managed to master the art of light without blinding or crushing space perception. This chandelier is in the so-called candle style, originating in the traditional candelabra, with upward facing lightbulbs and multiple arms, usually arranged symmetrically. Here, the six arms are identical and symmetrical, holding up the shades. Like most Scandinavian light fixtures...Category

- Copper and Brass Ceiling Lamp, Scandinavia, 1930'sBy Hans-Agne JakobssonLocated in Amsterdam, NLBeautifully patinated ceiling lamp with lots of resemblance with the work of Hans Agne Jacobsson but then more beautiful. Great shadowplay and warm vibrant light. Both the copper and the brass are very nicely patinated creating an organge / red light. Interesting geometrical figures and cleverly built: the source of light (the bulb) is hidden inside the lamp so don't expect a sea of light coming out of this one. For cosy corners...Category
