About the Item

Natural cotton cord, white nylon cord, white nylon thread, 18/3 SVT electrical cord with white braided nylon sleeve.

Doug Johnston’s collection of lighted works is hand-made in Brooklyn, New York of coiled and machine-sewn cord. The opaqueness of the cotton cord is juxtaposed with contrasting nylon cord, which allows for a warm luminosity. Originally created in 2012 - 2013, the pieces have been exhibited at Patrick Parrish Gallery in New York City, Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Design/Miami, and installed in locations around the world including Australia, the Maldives, Brazil, Japan, Bahamas, France, The Netherlands, England, Austria, and across the United States and Canada.
Since 2010 Doug Johnston has produced a wide range of functional and sculptural objects using a process of coiling and stitching rope using industrial sewing machines. He has built a formal vocabulary and studio practice that engages his varied interests in architecture, spatial and landscape formation, commerce, and fundamental human technologies. The work often sits at the intersection of art, design, and craft, taking the position that no made object is exclusively aesthetic or utilitarian. He often collaborates with his partner, Tomoe Matsuoka. They live and work in Brooklyn, NY and Osaka, Japan.
Bulbs, Dimming, and Lumens:
-Pieces do not include bulbs. All are wired with standard E26 (North America) or E27 (all other countries - available as an option) base sockets.
-Use of LED bulbs is recommended, with a 40-watt equivalent rating. 60-watt maximum rating for incandescent bulbs. -Do not use Halogen bulbs. The recommended bulb shape is the classic A19.
-Lumens and brightness are based on bulbs installed by the user.
-Sockets are dimmer compatible. Bulbs installed by the user must also be dimmer-compatible.
Wiring, Voltage, Certification:
-Wiring is for standard mains voltage (100V to 240V AC, depending on the country). All electrical cord used is 18/3 SVT. Each socket is wired with 12ft. of electrical cord. Longer leads are available upon request.
-No drivers or transformers are needed.
-Pieces are not damp-rated and are for indoor use only.
-Electrical installation should be done by a qualified licensed electrician.
-Pieces are not UL Listed by default. UL Listing may be available upon request for an additional fee and an extended lead time. All electrical cords and sockets used for North American wiring are individually UL listed by their manufacturers.
Installation:
Installation is not included in the listed prices. All pieces include basic installation instructions. All pieces with more than one cord/hook include a template for placement of the swag hooks on the ceiling. This template is unique to each piece, created during the fabrication of the piece, and is not replaceable.
All pieces are meant to be installed “swag-style” so that the weight of the light is carried by a hook, or several hooks, anchored into the ceiling. The cords extend vertically from the top of the shade piece to the hook, then from the hook to the canopy. Alternative installation methods may be available for additional fees and increased lead times.

Doug Johnston
Since 2010 Doug Johnston has focused on a process of coiling and stitching rope using industrial sewing machines, producing a wide range of functional and sculptural objects. The work utilizes a long history of human technologies such as cordage, coiled vessels, bags and basketry, masonry construction, sewing machines, and 3d printing. With these, he has built a formal vocabulary and studio practice that engages his varied interests in architecture, spatial and landscape formation, commerce, and fundamental human technologies. Johnston has shown his work at venues such as Patrick Parrish Gallery (NY), R & Company (NY), Cranbrook Art Museum (MI), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME), Collective Design Fair (NY), and Design/Miami (FL). He has participated in residencies at UrbanGlass, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. He received a Master of Architecture degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Drury University. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Johnston lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and Osaka, Japan, often collaborating with his wife, artist and designer Tomoe Matsuoka.
