About the Item

Splendid mythological painting from the 17th century. Oil artwork on canvas depicting a highly fascinating subject, Venus Punishes Love. We find the Goddess with her son on her lap, he tries to wriggle away in fear while Venus is ready to hit him with the scourge. Naturally this is an allegory where the blame towards those who abandon themselves to the will of Eros is clear. In fact, since ancient times, Cupid was seen as a capricious God, the cause of calamity because he led people to act madly or incorrectly in order to satisfy their desire. Lying in the foreground we find Hephaestus with his hammer, Venus' husband watches the scene with amusement together with his helpers, giants depicted in this particular composition with three eyes. A painting of great pictorial quality in every aspect, in particular in the creation of the flesh tones where the painter highlights the difference between the diaphanous and delicate skin of the mother and child and the darker skin of the God of Fire and his Cyclopes. Artwork attributable to the Italian painter Filippo Abbiati (1640-1715), one of the greatest exponents of Milanese Baroque, lacking authenticity. Spectacular antique contemporary frame in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, in good condition with some signs of aging. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and recovery of color in some small points, overall in a good state of conservation.
